UKIP welcome Government defeat on EU budget bid

Wednesday, 31st October 2012
UKIP welcomed the message sent to PM Cameron following the government defeat in the House of Commons over demands for a cut in the EU budget.
Nigel Farage MEP the UKIP leader said: "I am delighted that the House voted with the country rather than with the Government whips. It is outrageous that the Prime Minister was prepared to go to Brussels in November and argue for what he would call a freeze and the rest of us would call an increase in the amount of money removed from British taxpayers to be spent by the distant EU bureaucrats.

"That some have come to vote this way through naked political opportunism is no matter, there are many routes to the right result. Labour should be congratulated on discovering that the methods of the EU only lead to mass unemployment as today's figures from Eurostat make clear.

"I will be in Brussels for the summit in late November, and I can assure you that I will be watching Mr Cameron like a hawk to ensure that he does not backtrack on what was, after all only an indicative vote.

"UKIP of course believes that we should be looking at a cut of 100% of our payments to Brussels, but we must applaud this small step in that direction."
