Closure of Kingsnorth 'a cruel irony'

Monday, 12th March 2012

The closure of a Kent power station been condemned by UKIP's Industry spokesman, Roger Helmer MEP.

Mr Helmer said: "The closure of the Kingsnorth coal-fired power station is a cruel irony and a indictment of the EU's insane climate regulations.

"It was demand for its output in cold weather that led to the power station running out of permits to continue operating sooner than expected.

"Now more than 100 jobs will be lost, and the power for 2 million homes will have to be found elsewhere. Kingsnorth did the job of nearly 4,000 wind turbines - that's ten times the size of the nearby Thanet wind farm, and it is
ridiculous schemes such as that which are supposed to replace the lost capacity.

"You can be sure of higher bills as a result and there's a growing possibility of power cuts as reliable and cheap, but politically incorrect, power stations are shut down and replaced by highly subsidised and intermittent 'renewable' energy sources which will fail to meet demand."
