Jobs to go at nuclear plant

Thousands of potential jobs have gone in one of Kent's most deprived areas after the governments decision not to go ahead with a new nuclear power station at Dungeness .

With Dungeness A decommissioned and Dungeness B due to be closed by the EU large plant directive in 2018, people in the area had high hopes that the Dungeness C plant would provide 2,000 construction jobs and another 400 operations and maintenance jobs in the longer term.

With the likely blocking of expansion plans for nearby Lydd Airport when it comes before the planners early in the new year, this is a double blow for local employment with airport operators claiming their scheme would have created a further 600 new jobs.
